Rivalry of Warlords Discussion

Hello everybody! Since I feel like touching alot of weird and old used cards recently (See my post on Prohibition), heres another one on an old card, Rivalry of Warlords!

Previously bought to fame by Baha-sama back in 2008, this card was mainly used in the Victory Viper deck, since the deck concentrated on Machines / Angels. However, it was never a very popular card since people like to access monsters of various types which were useful (E.g. Rai-ou, Zombie Carrier, etc) in any random deck possible. On the flip side, I think this is obviously why this card should be played, due to the many random monster types people play, other then the obvious BF and Declarer decks which concentrate on only 1 type. Furthermore, with cards such as Soldiarity released recently, it pays off even more to concentrate on only 1 monster type!

That being said, I went to do some research on the rulings and here are some things to be noted about this card

1. This card does not affect face down monsters! (However, if they get flipped up due to cards like ceasefire and swords of light, the effect then kicks in and the player has to send monsters to grave till theres only 1 type left)

2. You are unable to release a monster of 1 type to advance summon a monster of a different type (You cannot even release in the first place, so the arguement of "For that instant there is no monster on the field" doesnt work)

3. You can chain Rivalry to cards such as Cry of Living Dead, when opp has 1 monster type and tries to sp summon a 2nd type. When this happens, the 2nd monster will be summoned out, then destroyed straight away, while the first monster stays on the field (Same ruling appears for Summon Priest. He pays cost, and then you chain rivalry. Rescue cat cannot be summoned out since it is not magician type, so unless he got some other magician type level 4 in deck = profit!)
*How many people even have that other then Lyla / Breaker, where especially such decks prob wun have cat in the first place. Spy ftw?

4. Rivalry checks for the card after it hits the field. Therefore if you have, say Zombie World on the field, you can summon any other monster type and nothing will happen, since Zombie World will change it all to undead. However, if Zombie World gets destroyed, then Rivalry effect will kick in after that and you must send till you have 1 type left

5. You cannot synchro / contact / fusion for a different monster type then whats on the field. So even if you have say, all the infernity in the world, Trishula also cannot be summoned, lol. Anybody has demon type in their extra pile?

Above rulings are all pretty standard stuff, though I believe what happens to GB vs Rivalry which is what most people are concerned about. So heres it is!

6. If you only have laquari on the field while Rivalry of warlords is already opened, and you tag, you must prove that you have another beast warrior type gb in deck(As per GB ruling, it cannot be another Laquari, so must be a legal target as well), then you can send laquari back to deck. After that however, if you have no monsters left on the field, you may then summon any other type of GB out (e.g. Bestiari). However, if you have no other beast warrior type gb in your deck, you cannot even tag out that laquari in the first place.

7. As per the previous synchro / contact / fusion ruling, if you have another gb (Non bird type) face up on field, even if you set bestiari, you cannot contact for Gyazarus. However, if the other gb is face down and bestiari is face up, or both of them are face down, you will be able to contact for Gyazarus (Sad life). All this is of course assuming you have no other face up monsters on the field

In other (LOL) news

8. If you have another monster type on the field, you cannot "eat" Rivalry and sp summon Trap Eater, because Trap Eater cannot even be sp summoned in the first place

9. Cards sent to grave by Rivalry are "sent" and not "destroyed" so Stardust cannot do anything against it

10. When Rivalry is on the field, and opp sp summons Gorz, the token cannot be summoned as it is a different type

11. When Rivalry is on the field, and you hit an opp monster and deals damage to the player, he cannot sp summon Tragodia, as that monster is still on the field, of course unless it is also a Demon type

12. If you have no monsters on the field and you activate a card which summons multiple monsters of different types (E.g. Return from DD), what happens?
A: 調整中 (LOL - Assume as cannot activate at all I guess)

13. If you have a monster type on the field, and you activate a card such as Reasoning / Monster Gate, what happens?
A: 調整中 (Double LOL - Same assumption as above?)

I guess this post is long enough already, so I shall not do any further then the point forms. With a small summary on the 3 scenarios for Rivalry which should answer most questions

Scenario 1:
Q. Opp has critter on field. He cry of living dead declare Cydra and you chain rivalry?
A. Cydra will get sp summoned, then Rivalry effect kicks in, so send either Critter / Cydra to grave, then only the surviving type can be summoned after that

Scenario 2:
Q. Opp has critter on the field and you also have Rivalry activated on the field, and he wants to activate cry of living dead?
A. Cry of living dead can be activated, just that it must select a demon type. If not, no legal target and cannot activate at all

Scenario 3:
Q. Opp has critter on the field, I activate Rivalry and he chains with Cry of living dead on Cydra?
A. Cydra will get sp summoned, then Rivalry effect kicks in, so send either Critter / Cydra to grave, then only the surviving type can be summoned after that (Yup, same ending as scenario 1)

Scenario &*(&%#@*&
Q. Opp has Laquari on the field, I activate Rivalry and he chains with Cry of living dead on Bestiari, and chains further with Book of moon on Laquari?
A. Laquari gets covered down, Bestiari is summoned, Rivalry kicks in and nothing happens. Then Opp contacts both for Gyazarus and you start scolding the whole world...

And I hope you enjoyed another wall of text from DSummon, till my next wall of text, enjoy folks!

  1. Lol at how strong Konami encourage us to play this card.

"13. If you have a monster type on the field, and you activate a card such as Reasoning / Monster Gate, what happens?
A: 調整中 (Double LOL - Same assumption as above?)"

The logical answer would be to rule this the same as Snipe vs. Stardust. However, the answer seems to be the same as the answer to q12, and that would make no sense. In other words, Konami fails once again.

  2. "4. Rivalry checks for the card after it hits the field. Therefore if you have, say Zombie World on the field, you can summon any other monster type and nothing will happen, since Zombie World will change it all to undead."

This is incorrect becuase if rivalry checks the card after it hits the field, then players will be able to summon a monster of different type then choose which type to keep; however, the offical ruling is that you cannot summon a monster of different type. Because you cannot summon the non-zombie monster in your hand, Zombie world's effect cannot be applied.

[a common misconception is that cards can predict the future, but they can not. Rivalry of the Warlords cannot take not take into account the fact that zombie world WILL (future tense) turn the monster into a zombie]
